The Howard League for Penal Reform combines litigation, research, campaigning, media engagement and policy work to advocate for penal reform. Their aim is to build a more humane and effective response to crime, which provides justice to all and helps reduce reoffending.

Howard League also runs the country’s only dedicated advice line for children and young people in prison, which not only provides vital advice and support, but also enables the organization to build young people’s lived experiences into their work.

Current strategic priorities for the Howard League include resolutions to ongoing incarceration issues related to the Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence as well as Joint Enterprise sentencing – both of which have been abolished but continue to have a devastating and lasting effect on lives inside and outside of prison. They are also working to stem the overuse of remand - and to improve the lives of those on remand.

Treebeard is providing unrestricted multi-year funding to the Howard League.
